Trista Johnson – Why We Play

My T1D Story

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4, and my dad has been living with it for over 51 years. You could say we were both thrown a curve ball early on — but it hasn’t stopped us from living a full and adventurous life.

Between the two of us, we’ve traveled to 12 different countries (including going on safari in Uganda together), and we both played college athletics. T1D has come along for the ride, but it’s never been the one calling the strikes.

The bond my dad and I formed through our shared experience with T1D ultimately led me to a career supporting others in their own journeys.

Type 1 diabetes now runs deep in our family — with three other relatives diagnosed in recent years. That’s why this tournament means so much to us. It’s not just about playing wiffle ball (though that runs deep in our family too) — it’s about showing up for a community that carries an invisible challenge. We’re proud to play for all the kids, teens, and families out there doing their best with T1D — and to remind them they’re not alone.
